The Hallacı Mahmud Mosque stands in the Doganbey quarter of Ulus, in the old centre of Ankara. From whom and when it took its name has not been established. The original two-line Arabic inscription over its door records that this charitable work was built in 1545-46 by Ali b. Abdullah. There is a disagreement about that reading: İbrahim Hakkı Konyali holds that the inscription as previously published by Mübarek Galib Bey was faulty and that its date had been given wrongly as 1496-97.
Above that building inscription, written directly on the wall surface in black permanent ink, is a second, verse inscription of four couplets recording a repair, which states that the mosque was repaired in 1905 by a man named Hacı Hakkı Efendi. The Directorate of Foundations repaired the building again in the 1950s. Its importance is typological: among the many places of worship in Ankara, it represents the single-domed mosque type of the Ottoman period. It is on Susam Sokak in the Hacı Bayram quarter.
