Guide
The Clandras aqueduct crosses the Banaz stream inside the Ulubey canyon. The Ministry's page carries two statements about its date without reconciling them: that it is estimated to have been built about 2,500 years ago, in the Phrygian period, and that it bears the marks of Roman-period architecture. It is narrow and has a single arch, its two ends resting on the rock of the hillsides, 24 metres long and 17 metres high.
Its purpose is clear enough. The spring on the eastern side of the canyon was carried by this aqueduct over a distance of 2.5 kilometres to the nearby ancient city of Pepouza, thought to have been a large settlement. The aqueduct and the ground around it lie on the 7,863-metre walking route laid out in the Clandras-Pepouza ecotourism area and are also a popular picnic spot locally. Reach Karahallı from the Uşak bus station.
