The museum began work on 9 June 1972 on the lower floor of the People's House building, displaying 116 works gathered from the region.
Since 2017 it has stood in a building of the reign of Abdülhamid II that served for about ninety years as the government house.
With 3,000 square metres of enclosed and 600 square metres of open display area, the museum presents its works and finds to visitors in halls of archaeology, ethnography and palaeontology.
