The group of buildings stands in the village of Esenköy near Nazilli, on the skirts of the castle of Harpasa, a Carian city. In some sources the place is called the Arpaz tower.
It was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century by the beys of Arpaz, who owned the large farming estate that took in the cultivated land stretching as far as Akçay. Ottoman remains of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have also been found here, and on that ground it may be that the castle was built earlier and renewed later.
With its bey's mansion, its watchtower, its granary, its stables and its outbuildings, the place has the look of a château.
The tower was built for Hacı Hasan Bey of Arpaz by masters he brought from Rhodes in the reign of Mahmud II.
